Why are spring cleanings so important?

As mentioned above, spring cleanings are a very critical part of the maintenance of ponds and waterfalls, especially for water features that are shut down fort the winter. Over the course of time, organic debris such as leaves, grass, and other plant debris can make its way into the pond, and rain and snow can carry nutrients and compounds into the water that can lead to horrible algae, muck, and clarity issues. In a spring cleaning, we drain the water out and power wash the whole feature before rinsing it down to remove a large amount of the muck that has settled to the bottom of the pond. Not only does this help remove lots of organic material that could otherwise make your water feature look or smell unpleasant, it also allows us to check for potential issues with lights, pumps, and rebuild any rock walls that may have fallen in. There's no better time to get your pond ready for the year than in the spring cleaning!

What if I have fish?

We take great care to make sure that your fish are affected as little as possible during spring cleanings. Our technicians will first place a large container in a shaded area of the yard and fill it with water from your pond so that the fish will have a familiar water environment before gently removing the fish from the pond and placing them in the container. The container has an aerator placed inside it before it is covered with a tarp to ensure no predators capitalize on an easy meal.

Once the cleaning is done, our technicians add special water treatments to neutralize chemicals added by city water systems that can be harmful to the health of the fish. They will also add water to the container so that the fish aren't shocked by the temperature difference and can have a smooth transition back to their home.
